For the first time, Singapore’s archaeology and living heritage will soon share a common home. In November 2025, HeritageSG (HSG), a subsidiary of the National Heritage Board (NHB), will launch ArCH Square at 125 Jalan Sultan in Kampong Gelam. It will be the first dedicated education and outreach centre for archaeology and intangible cultural heritage (ICH) not just in Singapore, but in the region.

Managed by HSG, the new centre will serve as a key platform and enabler in the fields of archaeology and ICH, also known as our living heritage. While archaeology is the study of the past through material culture and ICH is steeped in tradition, both disciplines are relevant to the present in helping us understand who we are and enrich our everyday lived experiences. The centre hopes to appeal to younger generations who may be looking for different experiences and entry points to understanding our shared past and navigating what it means for them today.

Ms Ong Chiew Yen, Chief Executive, HSG, said, “ArCH Square presents a powerful opportunity to bring Singapore’s archaeological collections together with the rich tapestry of our living heritage, as there is much to be tapped into when the two come together to create new heritage experiences for Singaporeans, especially the younger ones. Beyond showcasing these collections, their stories and the links between them, it will be a dedicated space that celebrates the practitioners involved in these areas of work – where communities can grow, practitioners can share their craft, and new ideas can flourish. We hope that ArCH Square can be a catalyst in reinforcing and growing the industries associated with archaeology and ICH, both locally and in the region.”

Ms Chang Hwee Nee, Chief Executive Officer, NHB, said, “Community is at the heart of ArCH Square. With this new space, we want to create a meeting place where Singaporeans can discover fresh perspectives of our past and present, and be inspired to get involved in heritage.  ArCH Square builds on NHB’s efforts under Our SG Heritage Plan 2.0 to strengthen our shared identity, build a vibrant heritage ecosystem, and encourage Singaporeans to actively contribute to and connect with Singapore’s story. We believe ArCH Square will play an important role in advancing NHB’s ongoing efforts in archaeology and ICH, such as the Stewards of ICH initiative, our UNESCO nominations and archaeology projects.”

ArCH Square will open in November at 125 Jalan Sultan, marking a new chapter in Singapore’s heritage journey. General entry to the centre will be free for all, with a mix of free and ticketed programmes. More details will be shared closer to the date.
