From 19 October to 1 November, Singapore Repertory Theatre (SRT) is proud to bring back the 2023 sold-out dinner theatre sensation, Por Por’s Big Fat Surprise Wedding.

Held at a pop-up restaurant in One Farrer Hotel, this unique experience, enjoyed over an
exquisite four-course meal, combines Singaporeans’ love for food with SRT’s passion for
compelling storytelling. Comedic icon Koh Chieng Mun reprises her role as the beloved Por Por (grandmother), a character that won the hearts of audiences in 2023.

SRT is no stranger to site-specific theatre, having presented Ah Kong’s Birthday Party (1998), Caught (2019) and C-O-N-T-A-C-T (2022). And, of course, the much-loved biennial Shakespeare in the Park in Fort Canning Park.

“Por Por’s Big Fat Surprise Wedding resonated so deeply with audiences that we knew we had to bring it back. The blend of heartfelt storytelling, cultural richness, and immersive theatre made it an unforgettable experience for everyone who attended.” said SRT Artistic Director Gaurav Kripalani.

Award-winning playwright and actress Jo Tan plays a dual role in this production, both
writing the script and performing on stage. Reflecting on her return to the role of Rainy, Jo Tan shares, “As a writer/performer, it’s a rare honour to get something as large-scale as Por Por’s Big Fat Surprise Wedding staged once, much less twice! And of course it’s exciting to revisit the show and be able to refine it. The first-time round, I think we were all figuring out how to best structure a show that was also a Chinese wedding dinner. Now that we’ve gathered so much feedback and learned so much by doing, we can use that to make changes that boost aspects of the story and hopefully amp up the audience experience.”

POR POR GOES DOWN UNDER
The SRT team is delighted to announce that Por Por’s Big Fat Surprise Wedding has been invited to the OzAsia Festival in Adelaide this November. This unique dinner theatre experience, rooted in vibrant Singaporean culture, is set to charm audiences Down Under, and the team is proud to showcase local talents and this unique Singapore dinner theatre experience on an international stage.

“Bringing this show to the OzAsia Festival in Adelaide is a tremendous honour for us. It’s a chance to share a slice of Singaporean life and our unique approach to theatre with an
international audience, showcasing the incredible talent and creativity that exists within our local arts scene.” says Gaurav Kripalani, Artistic Director.
The show will run at the Adelaide Festival Centre from 6 – 9 November 2024.

SYNOPSIS
It’s a wedding celebration hosted by the Chan family, but they aren’t especially happy.
Firstly, the bride is their 70-year-old matriarch, Por Por. Secondly, they’ve never met the
groom. In fact, nobody knows who he is, and Por Por declares he will only be revealed at the wedding dinner itself.
It’s all very exciting, but can somebody truly be in love with this sweet old lady, or is this a
classic Crimewatch love scam?
It’s up to Por Por’s righteous insurance agent son, Francis, his hapless civil servant wife,
Rainy, and their precocious teen, Prudentia, to save the whole family from possible
disgrace… unless her friends – restauranteur Ajeet, KTV king Adam and polymath helper
Flordeliza – can keep Por Por’s plan on track.
Come eat, drink, and be a guest as Por Por is to be married (or not) … it’s the wedding
celebration of the year!
You won’t want to miss this night of hilarious fun while feasting on a four-course culinary
experience.
