Gear up for unique contemporary art experiences with SAM! In the coming weeks, SAM will be presenting a range of free and ticketed programmes inspired by art practices at its anchor venue at Tanjong Pagar Distripark along with other presentations islandwide. Highlights include a weekend carnival featuring traditional games, art activities and free nostalgic treats, an interactive showcase at a public library, immersive art walks led by local storytellers, and an engaging pinhole photography workshop.

Learning Gallery Opening Carnival

To celebrate the opening of SAM’s new Learning Gallery, an all-ages space designed to inspire curious and authentic encounters with contemporary art, SAM is hosting a weekend carnival brimming with nostalgic activities and endless fun. Visitors can get creative by making their own water marble coasters and shrink art charms, challenge friends and family to traditional games like five stones or chapteh, and indulge in free popcorn and traditional ice cream that is reminiscent of fond childhood memories. 

  1. childISH  (The first showcase at the Punggol Regional Library will run from now till 21 July 2024) 

ChildISH is a multisensorial showcase featuring poems by five local poets Amanda Chong, Hamid Roslan, Pooja Nansi, Charlene Shepherdson and Daryl Qilin Yam that were crafted in response to the works featured in the Learning Gallery at SAM. Complemented by an artwork from local illustrator Tan Zi Xi and drawings by pupils from Ang Mo Kio Primary School, ChildISH invites visitors to look back at their childhood with a fresh perspective and explore a rich tapestry of emotions and experiences.

  1. A Weekend with The Everyday Museum (27 – 28 July and 2 – 4 August 2024)

At the end of the month, The Everyday Museum, a public art initiative by SAM will feature programmes anchored on the theme “Embodied Voices”, including engaging talks, workshops, and performances that present everyday environments in a new light. For instance, participants can join a workshop to craft their own pinhole cameras from household materials and explore light, shadows, and perspective, or experience Sekali Theia, an immersive audio journey responding to Sookoon Ang’s Moonlight installation, exploring the coexistence of multiple temporal and spatial layers within Tanglin Halt’s emptied flats and the Rail Corridor’s spectral tracks. Participants may also choose to embark on an intimate, multi-sensorial journey through a storytelling session featuring Kamini Ramachandran, Syafiq Halid and Joseph Nair as they uncover our metaphorical and spiritual connections to the banyan tree.
